Panagiotakos<\/a><\/p>\n<p>[\/authors]<\/p>\n<p>[summary]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objective:<\/strong> The relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern and stroke development\u00a0has been rarely examined. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the association between adherence to the\u00a0Mediterranean diet and ischemic stroke presence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Material-Methods:<\/strong> During 2010\u20132011, 250 consecutive patients with a\u00a0first ischemic stroke (77\u00b19 yrs, 55.6% males) and 500 healthy controls (62\u00b113 yrs, 62.2% males) were enrolled in the study.\u00a0Through the use of a validated questionnaire, the following information was recorded: socio-demographic characteristics,\u00a0anthropometric characteristics, medical history, physical activity, smoking habits and psychological status. Adherence to the\u00a0Mediterranean diet was assessed using the dietary index MedDietScore (theoretical range 0\u201355, increasing scores suggest\u00a0higher adherence).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Results:<\/strong> Patients (MedDietScore: 32.23\u00b14.40) had lower adherence to the Mediterranean diet than the\u00a0controls (MedDietScore: 29.99\u00b13.79) (P<0.001).
